On to Roanoke!

Once again we packed up our car to the heaping brim and took off from the Asheville area (Fletcher, really) destined for Roanoke Virginia, a city that we probably would have never heard of in our lives if we weren't specifically looking for a place to kill time between Asheville and NYC so that I can spend my birthday in the Big Apple.
My (Brian's) personal take on our time in Asheville---and Erika may chime in with a totally different opinion---is that we left feeling like it didn't have all that much to offer us that was particularly interesting or thrilling. However, I personally feel like this is at least partly because we didn't get to fully absorb the essence of the area in the same way that we did in other locales. The main difference between how we lived here and how we lived in most of our other locations is that usually we were inside city limits. Whether that be in the heart of urban downtown, in a suburb, or in a resort on the beach, we always had fun stuff at our fingertips. But this time we were situated in the country amongst large rural properties, no sidewalks, not much close by resembling entertainment for a good 20 or minutes of driving. This created an obvious obstacle in motivation to pop out and explore things. It turned into a thing where we had to plan out specific ventures rather than rely on organic discovery.
