The Caverns at Natural Bridge
Apr 02, 2022 | Roanoke, VA
We woke up fresh and ready to go! Just kidding, we slept in our cramped, cold car. But we were felling pretty good and were ready for some breakfast. We left our camp stove out all night thinking it would be fine, but something must have happened. Whether it was the stove itself or the butane, it would hold a very large flame at all. We waited a loooong time before we could cook our inordinate amount of breakfast top ramen. We ended up buying the fancy kind since it was on sale, which was a mistake, because it never tastes as good as the cheap stuff. Erika opted to eat it out of the pot while Brian's genius brain made his own version of "cup noodles". We slurped our noodles, packed up our campsite, and got ready to head back to the Natural Bridge state park.
We weren't going to see the bridge again today. Instead, we were there to explore the caverns! We went on a guided tour of the caverns, 34 stories below ground. It was hard to take photos since it was fairly dark, but I'm sure you get the picture. Stalactites, stalagmites, various Earth minerals, water trickling everywhere, you know, a cave. The tour guide was pretty unfunny but that's okay, we had a good time anyways as you can tell from the photos.
After our cave crawling, we headed back to Roanoke, but not before stopping to get some pictures of the magnificent St. Andrews church. It is now a Catholic boy's school.
For dinner, we went to Mellow Mushroom. It's a pizza chain here in the southern United States. Every location we've seen (except for the Winston-Salem location, that one was boring) looked so trippy and fun. At this one, they had a few awesome statues outside, like they do at most locations. We hadn't actually gone and eaten at any Mellow Mushrooms up until this point, and boy were we missing out! We got a build-your-own pizza with vegan cheese that they ended up charging us six extra dollars for! Dang! BUT, the pizza was absolutely delicious. We also got beer, of course.
That evening we watched The Killing of a Sacred Deer which was insane and amazing.
