Moving to Quebec City
Sep 24, 2022 | Quebec City, QC
It's that time again. We had put off our packing until the day before since it worked out for us last time, and once again it worked out fine. But since the parking laws are complicated in urban Montreal, in order to make it feasible we had to make sure to strategically grab a spot in front of our place in the evening (we paid for a couple hours of the meter as it led into the free hours at 9pm to make sure we nabbed one). Normally we didn't park in those spots because during weekdays they had weird "delivery truck only" hours in the early morning, but we lucked out with this being the weekend. If we hadn't gotten all that in order it would have been a nightmare with trucking stuff a block or two up the road where we usually had to park.
The drive was short and pretty, the former owing to Quebec City being only 3 hours from Montreal, and the latter because the trees were finally starting to change for the seasons.
When we arrived we were displeased to see that someone had parked in the designated parking spot that we had paid to reserve for our car. And we thought parking was going to be simple for once! But we were determined not to let it ruin our day, so we just took another spot, messaged the airbnb host, and went walking since it was clear that there was so much to see around our place. This is probably the most ground zero we've ever stayed as far as being within a tourist zone.

I took these from the botanical garden. I figured that if I was going to try them, it should be in Montreal, so I took a few nibbles in the morning. The "top" shaped one was completely mild. The wrinkly guy got me pretty good though! (I have a video I'll post some day when I have time to deal with videos)

And away we go!

The St Lawrence is huge. Blue whales even hang out in it since it's so large and opens up into the ocean.

Entering down on Quartier Petit Champlain which is often considered to be the "oldest shopping district in North America". It's named after Samuel de Champlain, who founded Quebec City in 1608.

Not sure what their thinking was in creating this store. They stuck an edgy, gimmick name like Fuck La Mode on a shop in the quaintest tourist area of a quaint tourist city where the average age of the shoppers is 60. And their clothing wasn't clever in anyway, it was all just branded with their name, which by the way means "fuck fashion".

Erika bought some "Maple Taffy" which is simply maple syrup chilled over ice so that it's hard enough to adhere to a stick.

Burgers n brews at Chic Shack. Getting this Irish style stout ended up put me on a kick of Irish stouts recently because a lot of the big Quebec breweries put one out.

We... We are...

We... We are...

We are a people... (I think it said "We are a people of Quebec" at the end but I didn't get a pic of it for some reason)

This is an assassin bug. He was standing on our window sill when we arrived. There is an important video having to do with this bug that I will post another time.

Porte St Jean (Saint John's Gate). The old part of the city (where we're staying) has fortified walls around it that served to protect the settlement in the 1600's. There are a few "gates" like this where the roads come in.

Taken from atop Porte St Jean looking outside the old city walls. You can see some people sitting on a part of the wall in the bottom right area.
