Random Wanderings Around Daytona
Dec 05, 2021 | Daytona Beach, FL
We spent the day sort of randomly wandering around the area. I think we were a little unsure of how to tackle this town since we had gotten used to the big city life in Austin/Nola and this was a very different animal. Things are more spread out in Daytona. And not only that, but it was such a big shift in scenery (the trees are different, the birds are different, the architecture is different) that we needed a moment to just drive around and understand where we were
We started off leaving the "shores" (Daytona Beach Shores is technically the actual city we lived in, rather than Daytona Beach proper) to head over into the main part of Daytona. We saw the speedway that apparently makes DB the "Birthplace of Nascar". After that we started getting interested in the style of buildings we were seeing around and drove through some neighborhoods to capture a few. We saw an egret (or heron, or crane, or stork... I never know which is which) walking around in someone's front yard and were immediately clued in that we're going to be seeing a very different set of fauna here
We drove through a tropical/swampy park and were amazed by all the Spanish moss (aka "old man's beard") that hung from the trees. We also saw that they had a zip line course in the park and noted that for a future activity.
Last thing we did was hit up the boardwalk/Main St and went into a few of the gift shops there. It turns out that in Daytona Beach, people really really don't like Joe Biden, or virtually anything left leaning. I mean sure, that's a lot of places, but DB is unique in how vehemently they espouse their distaste. They way they go about it comes across as pretty nasty and crass, and I'd say that no matter what party they were trashing.
