Dolphins & Outrageous Art
Dec 06, 2021 | Daytona Beach, FL
During the night, people were setting off fireworks on the beach. The kind we would call illegal but Florida calls normal, telling by all of the "FIREWORKS" superstores and billboards all along the way there.
In the morning, Erika spotted her first pod of dolphins swimming by, right outside/off of our balcony. They are not the easiest to catch on video, but she truly tried her best.
In the evening we decided to try and get to know the downtown area of Daytona Beach. There really wasn't a lot, and many places were closed due to the evening hour. There was one place, however, that drew us in with their interesting portrayal of Saint Nick himself. We entered and met an eccentric man named Barry Kite. We had walked into his art gallery, where he often takes numerous old photos and creates collages of them, usually in ways that are different than the original photo's intentions. His art style can really only be seen, not easily described. We chatted for a long time with him about Sonoma County, San Francisco, and of course, Daytona Beach. Turns out, Mr. Kite was originally from Petaluma, basically right near where we used to live. His art leaned heavily in the left-end of the political sphere so we discussed the vastly different politics between Sonoma County and Daytona Beach. Brian ended up buying a poetry book of his, complete with collages to go along with each poem. We also picked up some postcards, not entirely sure who we would want to send them to.
