Off to Atlanta!
Jan 03, 2022 | Atlanta, GA
Several people told us during our time in Florida that we needed to see St. Augustine FL and Savannah GA. It added a bit of time to our travel but we figured it was the best chance we had at ever seeing these places, so it got added to the itinerary.
Saint Aug had a unique vibe, enough to make us semi-regret not ending up there for a longer stay. The town talks up a big game about being the oldest city in America which, whether 100% true or not, it definitely had a very pre-America look to the streets and buildings. Only thing that belied it's ancient heritage was the amount of money that obviously goes into maintaining the city to a near SoCal level of pristine beachiness.
There was a strangely strong art gallery presence in the town. Lots and lots of galleries. We made the mistake of going into one that had a very salesman-y employee that followed us around the whole place trying to get us to buy anything he could. The worst part was that he had a brown rotten tooth in the front and breath so bad that the entire building smelled like a giant brown tooth. I still have him on my list of people that may have given me the covid that (spoiler alert) would show up in my body only a couple days later.
By the time we got to Savannah it was starting to get dark. We tried to hurry around a bit but it was mostly no use. We wanted to get to our place in Atlanta before it was the dead of night, so we just ate some quick pizza at one of those build-your-own Chipotle/Subway type places and got back on the road. The temperature was starting to become very, uh, "unfamiliar" compared to our solid 70s December in Florida.
